Thompson Dock

A photographic essay by Gerry Murphy.

Belfast Harbour Commissioners began the construction of the new Thompson Dry (Graving) Dock in 1903. It was completed in 1911, in time to permit the dry docking of Titanic’s elder sister, Olympic, on the 1st April, 1911.The photographs document the dusk of its usefulness and record the graffiti and detritus of the last working days in this cathedral to the sea.
